One of the most common things couples tell me is:
“We’re so awkward in front of the camera.” And honestly? Almost everyone feels that way. The good news: looking natural in your wedding photos has way less to do with being “photogenic” and way more to do with how you feel on your wedding day. As a wedding photographer, my job isn’t just to take pretty photos, it’s to help you feel comfortable, relaxed, and fully present so your photos actually look like you.

Here are my top tips for looking natural (and loving your photos).

Choose a Photographer You Feel Comfortable With

This is the biggest one. If you don’t feel at ease with your photographer, it will show in your photos.

When you genuinely like and trust your photographer, you’re more likely to:

Laugh naturally, Let your guard down, Forget the camera is even there

Your photographer should feel like a calm, supportive presence — not someone barking stiff poses at you all day.

Do an Engagement Session First

An engagement session is basically a practice run for your wedding day. It helps you:

Get used to being in front of the camera, Learn how your photographer directs, Build confidence together as a couple.

By the time your wedding day comes, you won’t feel like strangers to the camera — it’ll feel familiar and easy.

Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera

The most natural photos happen when you’re interacting with each other, not performing for the camera. Instead of thinking: “What do I look like?”

Try thinking: “Wow, we’re really getting married.”

Talk, laugh, whisper, hold hands, make jokes — those real moments always photograph best.

Movement > Stiff Posing

You don’t need to know how to model. You just need to move.

Walking, swaying, spinning your dress, adjusting his tie, pulling each other in for a hug — all of that creates natural body language and genuine expressions.

I’ll guide you into flattering positions, but the magic happens in the in-between moments.

Build Time Into Your Timeline

Rushed photos = stressed energy = stiff faces.

When you give yourself breathing room in your timeline: You’re not worried about being late, You can actually enjoy the moment, Your photos feel calm instead of chaotic.

The more relaxed your day feels, the more natural your photos will look.

Trust the Process (and Your Photographer)

This one is huge. You don’t need to worry about your angles, your smile, or your “good side.” Your only job is to: Show up, Be present, Love your person, The rest is handled for you.

The Truth About “Looking Natural”

Natural wedding photos aren’t about being perfect.
They’re about being real.

The tears. The belly laughs. The nervous hands. The quiet moments before the ceremony. The way you look at each other when no one’s watching. Those are the photos that actually matter — and those are the ones you’ll treasure forever. And I promise: you don’t need to be a “camera person” to have them. You just need to be yourselves, and let me guide you and do the rest.
